RACHEL COMEY (US) Launched in 2001, the label started out as menswear-only. Shortly thereafter, women began buying the clothes in small sizes at Barneys, and so in 2003, the womenswear wing— now the brand’s focus—was created. The collections are often vintage-inspired with a slight rock-and-roll feel, making her designs popular with cool downtown girls. The label gained popularity after David Bowie wore a Rachel Comey shirt on Letterman and the designer’s work was featured in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. Though menswear is no longer an important part of the mix, well-crafted shoes for both sexes have become a big draw for customers.
